It is incredible that, lately, the American idea - of individual right, small government, self reliance - is seen as fit only for rednecks and fools -- while the mythologies of collectivism are so "progressive" and popular. Haven't we seen, over the past few hundred years, that the former works, while the latter keeps misfiring with 100% consistency?

The progressive agenda has failed. I agree with Mort Zuckerman, we're in a "modern-day" depression, and we just don't know it yet.

Consider that during the Great Depression, we didn't have millions of seniors on Medicare or Social security; we had no unemployment benefits; no food stamps or other "safety net" programs; no credit cards (little unsecured consumer credit at all). All these things serve as "buffers" against people feeling the pain of their economic conditions for a very long time.

As FDR did in the 30s, politicians will continue to inject anesthesia as long as they can. The striking Chicago teachers are symptomatic of some kind of failure of logic that is symbolic of the lack of willingness to comprehend what is going on; where 15% of the country is out of work but you have this group of people who are vastly overpaid already demanding even more from a financially destitute locality, oblivious to it all.

Like a star collapsing into a black hole, I think once we get to a certain point the collapse will happen quickly and then the long, slow process of rebuilding will begin. There is a lot of suffering to be done in the mean time though. But with any luck the progressive agenda, at least the fiscal remnants, will die with the economy.

Damn, I think I need some Prozac.
