I have no idea what affects turnout. It would be deeply ironic if the Democrats' cry of "the evil white racists are trying to depress minority turnout with their nasty voter id!" wound up scaring off lots of the Democrats' most ignorant and apathetic base voters.

What I don't know the answer to is: How much do these phony polls depress voting? Probably enough to switch elections around.

It would seem to me that the candidates would want to show that their polls were down (but not too much).

If I were running, I would want the polls to show that I am 2 points behind my opponent the whole time. It would tell the voters that they have to get their butts out there and vote. The only time I would want the polls to say that I was ahead is if I was so far ahead that it didn't matter.

I certainly hope that is not the case with Obama. Instead, I hope that the focus on the polls is more about ego and the general arrogance of the Obama campaign.
