Lots of newspapers have outsourced their news gathering. Even their sports and sports scores (partly owned by News Corp.). The bylines let me know it's not from AP or Reuters, or at least it was edited by a human. I prefer the dated and timelined stories with an email contact, as bloomberg.com does and wsj.com usually does. Yahoo has gotten away from timestamps, and often uses an elapsed time calculation.

Articles on the front page of the WSJ dated 9/12/2011 are bylined.
