It's not the cheap PC that people are buying it's the internet. These 1k pc's using a dial in modem are only incrementaly slower than a pc costing three times as much.

Doug - your are answering your own questions. The growth
in the $2000 plus systems home market will slow and to some
extent be cannibalized by the sub 1K. How will it
affect the $2500 ASP's in the corporate market? Remember,
93% of the corporate market belongs to everybody else, not
Dell.

What if Dell were to decide to forget the entry level home PC
first time buyers and focus on that 93% by dropping ASP's,
squeezing their margins a little, increasing volume, stealing
market share at an accelerated pace and growing revenue to
30Billion in short order. They'd still have 80% to go! That
would be tragic wouldn't it?

When you look at the big business segment picture, understand the growth opportunities and Dell's model, you realize that they could quickly put so many companies out of business if they decided to reduce margins a little. With such huge potential, why, why, why
focus on a low profit segment that does not play into the strength
of the business model youv'e spent 12 years developing that no
one else can touch?

I think too many people are completely confused about the
difference between the HOME and BUSINESS
PC segments and how they might ultimately affect or not affect
one another.

You are so right !!!!
The reason the sub $1000 PCs sold like hotcakes is because the PRICE!

Of course, there will still be people like to pay little more premium for

the high end systems, but not too much more. Besides, other competitors also offered high end products, and DELL is not the only one, but the only vendor which did not offer sub $1000 products. I don't know two years down the road ,when most people and corps realized that they can buy both the high/low end pcs with much lower
lower price, what DELL can offer !!!
I learn the same lesson as you did!!! Last Dec I bought my first notebook PCs with $3500, and this Aug, the same system was sold for
$2000.

Doug - Funny you mention the CPQ LCD box - I bought a 3020 for my wife a couple months back for 1850 thru CDW!!! Too bad they stopped making them, we like the machine and it has a great TFT screen, if you are interested, you can get returns/refurbished models on CPQ's net site that sells machines - I checked a couple days back and they had the 3020 for 1099 and the 3060 (200mhz MMX) for 1399! The site is
www.compaqworks.com

Also, I saw in a couple of Comdex articles that Hitachi now has an LCD based system (13.3 TFT screen) for a bit over 3 grand.

I think price is important, my relatives that do not have computers (and that I am trying to talk into getting computers) seem to all say 'why should I spend 3 grand on box that will be outdated in a couple years'. Well, I'm now getting their attention when I say how about 1 grand!

What %age of Dell's sales are home PCs, super or sub 1k? 5? 10%? And by how much have the Corporate machines decreased in price at Dell"s expense? Dell hasnt made money in home PCs esp low end, and you cant lose what you dont have. Can you say PowerEdge?
Granted Dell will have to fine tune machine prices, but then so will everybody. I still wonder whether entry headfirst in the LEAST profitable end of the market is a solution... my 1 cent!
