heard this on Levin's radio show....... This new third party candidate is self funded and very liberal. If he takes 10% of the total vote (virtually all from Democratic leading candidate Cardin) it would put Maryland in play. Cardin currently comfortably leads Republican Conservative Bongino by 54% to 44%. It's a long shot but that's all you get in Maryland. US Senate race starting to heat up in Maryland Posted: Sep 04, 2012 6:18 PM EDT Updated: Sep 04, 2012 6:18 PM EDT By Bob Barnard, @bobbybbarnard BALTIMORE - Many of you know there is a tight race in Virginia for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Jim Webb. But what about in Maryland? Did you even know Senator Ben Cardin was up for reelection? The race has been pretty quiet - until now. "Today, I'm announcing that I'm running for the United States Senate as an independent," said Rob Sobhani at a hotel in downtown Baltimore Tuesday at noon. "Because it's time to put partisan politics aside." Sobhani is a businessman, college professor and author. "And I'm asking you to join me today to reject partisanship, reject the tired partisanship that's strangling our children's futures," he said. Sobhani said he wants to help build double-decker express lanes along the Capital Beltway in Maryland. And to invest in Maryland's inner cities and Prince George's County school children. "The feedback I get from residents in Prince George's County, it's jobs and education," said Sobhani. "So $150 million in scholarships for low income children." The other candidate in the race is the Republican Dan Bongino. "I'm the only middle class representative in this race," he said. "Actually fighting for the middle class, not just talking about it." Bongino is a retired Secret Service agent who was on the protection details of both President Bush and Obama. He says there is one big issue in this election. "The economy. I would say I don't mind paying taxes. I don't think anybody does. I don't think there's a Republican in the country running on a platform of we don't need to pay taxes. All we're saying is we don't want to pay more," Bongino said. The incumbent, Democrat Ben Cardin, is in North Carolina this week attending the Democratic National Convention. His campaign staff said the senator was too busy Tuesday to talk to us - even by phone.
