I have read a lot of Strauss and like most of his work. Even like some of it a lot. But his disciples--like Mansfield and Bloom--go off into a world I don't share. On the other hand, some people who were influenced by him have done excellent work--even Mansfield, as I said, referring to his work on Machiavelli. Bloom has also done good work, just not his more "popular" work, like The Closing of the American Mind, which brings out the cranky eccentric in him and points in the direction that Mansfield goes at times.
