If you asked me ten years ago if Russian foreign policy is more rational than America's, you would get a "are you nuts?". Now the Russians seem like they know how the world operates much better than we do.

“You are the Soviet Union now, guys, and you pay the price,” he said. “You are trying to distribute democracy the way we tried to distribute socialism. You do it the Western way. They hate both.” He said dictators were preferable to the constellation of armed forces that emerge when they are unseated.

“They lynched Qaddafi — do you really think they will be thankful to you?” he said. “They use stupid white people from a big rich and stupid country which they really hate.”

You can question what this Russian diplomat says, doubt his sincerity, or whatever... but it's time to acknowledge that in many of our recent actions - AND inactions - in the ME, we do not know our arse from our elbow. Too often our actions are based not our true interests and principles, but on abstract and/or politically correct ideas.

We are "building nations" and trying to convert them into democracies. -- not unlike conquerors of hundreds of years ago, who conducted forcible religious conversions. Extremists caught on to this game - and are using us to help install them as leaders.
