I wasn't paying attention enough to see the bubble's being blown back then, but I was a vocal opponent of the "deficits don't matter" policies of Bush Jr. That was and isn't healthy. Anyway, it doesn't matter. We're in a death spiral now. The majority of Americans on both sides of the aisle are too invested in an increasingly larger welfare state. I believe we've now reached the tipping point beyond which that kind of mentality is hard to reverse. Look at this thread, with folks like Tejek openly saying capitalism is a failed system and advocating for a system that looks a lot like Communist style Central Planning. This country is in real trouble and I don't know that we have the strength of leadership within either party to reverse the tide.

Soooo, all that's left is for folks like you and me to make the most of it. If you have money and good credit, still lot's of money to be made. The rich will get much richer in this environment.

I think the march of globalization and international virtually stateless mega-corporations are both trends that go against us. We need VERY smart leadership, with everyone pulling in the same direction. Things don't look good for that.
