Tony Perkins of Red Herring calls ASND a "Second Tier, Niche player" (them's fightin' words).Permission granted from CNN to redistribute limited portions (less than 250 words) as long as they provide conspicuous attribution to CNN as the originator and copyright holder of such material. Tech.-Stocks.-Cont./Call JOHN DEFTERIOS, CNNfn ANCHOR, DIGITAL JAM: I'm John Defterios in New York with Tony Perkins of The Red Herring Magazine. He's out in San Francisco. We're taking your calls. 1-800-304-FNET (20:11:00) is the number. We are being flooded right now, Tony. The first caller is from Connecticut. It's Robert on the line for you. Go ahead, Robert.... DEFTERIOS: We're going (20:13:30) to sweep through the South here. We're going to go to Texas. We've got Taz on the line for you. Hi, Taz. CALLER: Hi. Tony, in-line with the technology stocks, Ascend (Company: Ascend Communications; Ticker: ASND; URL:ascend.com (20:13:40) has been under pressure for the last, I guess, three or four months. What is your prognosis? When do you think they'll be out of the doldrums? PERKINS: We've been (20:13:50) saying that networking sector in general, will be the great growth sector in 1998. Ascend, of course, is a second tier player, (20:14:00) more of a niche player compared to the Ciscos and the 3Coms (Company: 3Com; Ticker: COMS; URL: 3com.com but we think it's a leader in its categories. It's a good stock but the other thing we're seeing is more (20:14:10) monopolies really being solidified more quickly than we had thought. Oracle (Company: Oracle Systems ; Ticker: ORCL ; URL: oracle.com is solidifying its position in the data base markets. Cisco is clearly going to continue to dominate networking. (20:14:20) Intel, of course, though, it's tough for the Ascends to do too much damage to the Ciscos, but as a second tier networking stock, (20:14:30) it should experience good growth in '98. DEFTERIOS: OK, Tony, we have to leave it right there. Thanks for joining us.
