CHRISTMAS

"I smell Christmas," my young son says,
We put our faces in the prickly branches of the tree
And giggle as the needles brush our cheeks,
The strands of lights outline the room
In waves of blinking colors,
Waiting to wrap the tree in season's glow,
While the cat, enchanted by the fact
That we have let the outdoors in,
Lies underneath as still as still
Waiting for the squirrel
He is sure hides within.

"I hear Christmas!" cries my son.
In each window glows one single candle-white
With wreath above, red ribbons hanging down.
From all around
The notes of Saint-Saens' Christmas pour
Their sweetness on us as we watch the first official ornament
Be hung.
We light the fire
And through the room the glimmer of gold and silver
Bits of Christmas shine
On floor and chair
And in my children's eyes.

"I taste Christmas!" smiles my son.
And we toast the new season with the Santa eggnog mugs
And hug each other
As we feel it enter our home and our hearts
Through the sounds and the smells and the lights
And the love,
Filling us
With the memories of Christmas past
And the promise of the One to come.
