Caste system in Hinduism was a principal cause for people from lower castes to convert to Islam or Christianity since these religions do not preach discrimination based on caste. The caste system is not a core of Hinduism. It was invented to control the people who were sort of "brain washed" to accept their poverty and to serve (slavishly) the people of the higher castes. And they were told that they would be serving God's will if they did so since only God created them into the caste they were born in. Since it was not in the scriptures and it was just a social issue, Gandhi could embark on his mission to overturn that system. In that process, he was assassinated by a member for the highest caste. Again, they felt threatened and so they had to assassinate him. Self immolation is a sort of peaceful way of expression in that in this others are not killed like we see hen a suicide bomber strikes. And these self immolation are due to cultural history not because of the Buddhist religion. The Islam religion on the other hand states that if they are persecuted because of their belief or their religion is attacked, they need to come out and fight them since they are "infidels". I don't know if Buddhism says anything like that. Even the Dalai Lama is perplexed and hence refuses to comment on self immolation: thehindu.com
