" Your car doesn't support bluetooth audio?"

Actually, it doesn't have it straight from the factory. For a while, I went on a bluetooth audio kick, getting BT headphones and a BT gateway so I could stream to my car via the line in headphone jack, but ultimately, I decided that A2DP just sounds terrible to me. Plus I could never get it working reliably with my steering wheel controls (for fast forwarding, switching tracks, etc).

"Thats really unfortunate, that the capability is lost in your BMW due to Apple's switch from one closed standard to another. "

au contraire mon frere. The point of this whole exchange with Sly is that the iPod kits in both my VW and my wife's BMW will continue to work as they always have, once we get the Lightning adapters. There's been a considerable amount of FUD being spread around the backwards compatibility of the new connector, but mostly that's been cleared up now with Sly's help. Turns out that the features that are no longer supported are video out and a feature called "iPod Out," whereby an iPod could project a user interface to a car stereo. Our iPod kits were never fancy enough to feature video or an navigational interface. In our cars, the iPods essentially emulate disk changers, in that I could use the normal stereo controls to switch playlists and FF through tracks and such. It's convenient

We both currently use our iPod kits with actual iPods, not our phones, since neither of us use iPhones. But it would be one of the arguments for the iPhone 5 over the competition for both of us. Apple does love lock in, no doubt.
