Does AT&T Have an iPhone Advantage Over Sprint and Verizon?
By Aabha Rathee | More Articles - September 17, 2012

Apple’s ( NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5 has the ability of handling simultaneous voice and data functions,
but it turns out that of the top three major U.S. wireless operators, only AT&T( NYSE:T) will be able to
offer the capability. A Verizon ( NYSE:VZ) spokesman told The Vergethat the version of the iPhone 5
supported by the carrier will not be able to handle the feature even on an LTE network.

“The iPhone 5 was designed to allow customers to place a voice call on the Verizon Wirelessnetwork, while
letting customers access the Internet over the WiFi,” the spokesman said.

Because Sprint ( NYSE:S) uses the same CDMA model as Verizon, it will not support SVDO either. AT&T
will offer simultaneous voice and data on both its HPSDA+ and LTE networks, though LTE speeds are not
expected to be reached while a user is on a call.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 went live at 12:01 a.m. on Friday and the initial stock sold out in just about 60
minutes, with Apple having to adjust estimated shipping dates.
