Steve, I was simply using the numbers in the Wolf Byte analysis. I suspect that the margins are healthier on the more expensive Presarios than on the cheaper sub-zeros. The issue the analysis raised is whether the sub-zeros were eroding total profits from Compaq. The analysis concluded no. My analysis of the analysis is we don't know -- there are simply too many unknowns. The "analysis" consisted of mainly a lot of hand-waving concerning the amount of substitution and profit margins.

I suspect that these cheap machines are more than adequate for any number of business purposes like word processing and spread-sheets. As such, I expect that the "analysis" didn't consider that part of the substitution equation. I also suspect that the true purpose of these boxes isn't to generate immediate profit, but represents a longer-term strategic thrust.
