The Lowly horrendous Astros(now 52 games BELOW .500) now appear to have ruined a miracle run by Phils. If we had swept the Astros instead of going 1-3 against them, we would NOW tied with Cards instead 3 games back(and we would have been 14-1 for are last 15 games, but are instead 11-4 for those 15 games because Astros pushing us around) There are only 11 games left, we just can't make it as we are 3 behind Cards Dodger 2.5 behind and Brewers(on a 7 game win streak) are just 1.5 behind. We are now 40 and 23(63 games) since we were 37 and 51(84).
Again i must rally to Howards defense:Howard himself says he deeply annoyed at his .230 average, BUT i point out, though batting .230 he driven in 54 runs in 65 games with 13 HRs, done the math, and over a 162 games season that works out to 139 rbis and 31 HRs . How possible? His batting average with men on base MUST be over .300, has to be.
Horst ERA in relief now 1.09(LH specialist and means trading Valdez was a good trade---sadly for Valdez, Reds simply rarely play him--use him most as PH) was GLAD he got a big ovation when he PH for Reds in Philly--who will ever forget his being the winning pitcher in that 17 inning game!?
Charlie has not played Ruf at all--think he will not play Ruf until are we mathematically eliminated---i had hoped to see him get lots at bats.
Pierre REFUSES to get old! He now has 2132 hits in Majors playing for 6-teams in 12 years:also has 589 stolen bases.
There should be a JHOF--that standsJourneymensHallofFame. Later. Max:
Kendrick now 8-3 since allstar game.

"Ruf earned the nickname ''Babe'' by leading all minor leaguers with 38 homers this season, breaking Ryan Howard's single-season record at Double-A Reading.

He didn't take long to show his power stroke.

Ruf connected off Detwiler in the second inning, turning on an inside pitch and hitting a towering drive out to left-center. The rookie got the silent treatment in the dugout. Players held back smiles and ignored Ruf until the inning ended before congratulating him with high-fives. Fans in left field gave him a standing ovation when he jogged out to his position."

He is now 2 for 5. But nonetheless hit hit a towering drive off a top-notch pitcher.

i want to mention the name Harmon Killebrew, as Killebrew (who died this yearof cancer) has the lowest lifefetime BA of any position player in history--lifetime average was .243 (nor was a great fielder(a good one though, as a first basemen)

Why? His was an RBI machine. Howard is hitting ONLY .227 since his return(will be his lowest season average ever) but has 56 RBIs in 67 games!, which over a full season would be about 135--or a typical year for Howard.

He also got to 300 HRs in the 2nd fastest time ever by a major league player. He has been batting over .300 with men on.

If this "Babe" Ruf (age 25, due to years wasted trying to be a pitcher) can be a Howard type, this virtual unknow struggling Minor League Pitcher) will do wonders for Phils---he has was moved from first base to LF, because of Howard and they say he has proven to be good Left Fielder. He is 6'3'' 220 pounds.
Phils at 78-76 now 16 games above .500 since they were 37-51 My target of 81-81 a wanted to see, looks good now. Max Cards are in position to be the first wildcard team to go to World Series twice in a row.
Dodgers have been a huge disappointment, 10 games behind Giants(Giants pitching pitching pitching--Pence as played at same level he played for Phils----his BA will be his lowest ever, however, i think.
Victorino was struggling when he left Philly, and has struggled since.
