Interesting argument, which I have actually never heard before :) Worth the while thinking about. Also because Stalin no doubt would have loved to get even after the Russian loss in the Russian Japanese war, where they lost Kamchatka. That said, at least he could invade and occupy the Kurile Islands after the Japanese capitalisation without any of the other 'allies' saying anything. You look at the totally under developed Vladivostok coastal area: With a better deal with japan over the Islands, that whole area would have been well developed by and financed by the Japanese! Just a ferry jump over from Japan, just think of it. /Taro

the 2nd bombing might have saved millions of japanese lives. the 2nd one got them to surrender before Russia got into the war. If they had Russia would have demanded the break up of japan like they did in Eastern Europe. Tokyo would have had a 'berlin' wall. northern Japan run by the ruskies. Russia entered the war (Aug 8) before Japan surrendered and continued to run amuk on the mainland for a week or so after the Japanese surrender. Regardless, they were in NO position to invade Japan as they had no significant naval forces in the east. It's 100 miles of open seas even at the narrowest point from the mainland. Just NO way. They didn't even have the time to grab all of Korea before the US put forces in Korea.
