Was just about to post that article to you TJ..

It's TRULY a scary thing when a supposedly reputable gold merchant is involved in the counterfeiting of Gold bars.

Who of us has the expertise to actually know the difference in weight/size of a real gold bar and able to discern the difference?

It definitely has potential for putting a crunch on gold demand..

Hawk

Yoicks!

I think you can use sonic tests non-invasively to determine if it's really gold. The atomic weights of gold and tungsten are nearly identical, so Archimedes would be stumped.

When I was looking at gold bars a few years ago, I asked the dealer how he could tell (tungsten in the bars isn't a new problem), and he said he weighs them. If they're a gram off he won't take them. It seems weight is an easy thing to fake, so I wasn't entirely convinced.

So... how do we know those things sitting in our safe deposit boxes are the real thing, serial numbers or not? Anyway, gives the phrase "fractional reserves" a whole new meaning.
