Life expectancy for someone 5 years old has not changed so much.
When Social Security was created, the average life expectancy of Americans was somewhere around 67. It is now around 78.

Yet the only mechanism to address this higher life expectancy is to increase the payroll taxes on current contributors. That's why many, including myself, would characterize Social Security as a Ponzi scheme.
