It wasn't the socialist elements that got us to where we are now, it was the unfettered capitalist elements.

You are right. We are the richest country in the world and still the most powerful, because we embraced capitalism and for two centuries had increasingly better regulations and laws to curb the worst aspects of capitalism. What's gone wrong in the last 30 years has been an increasing financialization of our economy and a tearing down of the laws that kept the economy stable and growing for decades. Remember, that Glass-Steagall was torn down by the GOP sponsoring the bill, and then Clinton signing it. Anyway, capitalism with proper controls and regulations in place is the best system ever created for increasing the wealth of a country. The Socialist aspects that have crept in are now threatening to permanently stifle that wealth growth. As I've said before, economic growth in Socialism is possible, but it is much slower and with lower volatility. Whereas, growth in Capitalism is much faster, but more volatile.

This really surprised me.

It was initially thought that Paul Ryan could be a big boost for the GOP ticket in Wisconsin, but that's not really proving to be the case. Voters in the state are closely divided on him with 48% rating him favorably to 47% with an unfavorable opinion. That's slightly down from a 49/45 spread on our August Wisconsin poll. It's not likely that Ryan's actually going to hurt the ticket in the state, but with voters that evenly divided on him he's not going to help much either.
