Tommy Thompson (R) thinks Mitt Romney is dragging him down in his Senate race. "The presidential thing is bound to have an impact on every election," Thompson told Madison TV station WKOW on Wednesday when asked about recent polling that showed him slipping behind Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.). "You know, whether you're a Democrat or Republican, if your standard-bearer for the presidency is not doing well, it's going to reflect on the down ballot." Two polls out in recent days show Thompson and Romney losing ground in Wisconsin, the home of Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate. Thompson was tied with Baldwin in one poll and trailed her by 9 points in another. Both pollsters had him up comfortably after his primary win six weeks ago.Romney was similarly struggling in the state, falling behind Obama by more than the poll's margin of error. That's a big change from polling conducted right after he chose Ryan. Thompson also said having to "regroup" financially after the primary contributed to Baldwin's edge. Baldwin was able to raise a lot of money while Thompson spent his smaller fundraising haul on an expensive primary, and she has been able to dominate the airwaves in recent weeks.
