9/28/12 Contest Update
Although stocks have tracked Obama’s poll numbers higher most of the year, this week was an exception. Over the past 7 days, The New York Times election forecasting guru, Nate Silver, boosted his estimate of Obama’s chances of victory by 7.8% to 83.9%, but stocks moved in the opposite direction. And, in particular, a few high-flying Contest portfolio stocks ran into some strong headwinds.
Nonetheless, at Friday’s close, the Contest median was still up an impressive 46.73% YTD (vs. up 51.23% YTD a week ago). In comparison, the Nasdaq Biotech Index was up 37.01% YTD (vs. up 38.70% YTD a week ago), while the Nasdaq Composite Index was up 19.62% YTD (vs. up 22.06% YTD a week ago).
After PPHM announced that some of its clinical trial data was sketchy, its stock gave up all of its YTD gains. And with a 20% initial allocation to PPHM, last week’s Contest leader, ROBERT’s portfolio, suffered considerably. Consequently, RKRW’s portfolio, up 104.99% YTD, is back in the lead, with GENE’s portfolio, up 93.96% YTD, holding on to second place and DONS’ portfolio, up 93.19% YTD, remaining in third place.
At Friday's close, 2 of the 38 Contest portfolios were in the red, with 24 of the 38 portfolios still beating the NBI.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks ranked by % Gained and % Lost for the week. And, as it’s the end of Q3, I’ve posted the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD.
(Foreign stock prices are not converted to US$ in the weekly and YTD Top 5 & Bottom 5 tables, when posted.)
Portfolio adjustments: MDVN 2-1 split.
Have a terrific weekend biotechies!
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
