Soup,

No follow-up except that I read a similar post on the AOL MF as well. It makes an awful lot of sense because the eMates are damn affordable. It also makes sense because of Apple's education focus and the fact that eMates communicate equally well with desktop pcs and macs.

What I also like about it is the chance that eMate sales would count as full-fledged laptop sales. It would make Apple's market share look huge. In fact, I've been unable to find someone who knows how the eMates have been counted in 1997. I do know Apple sold about 100,000 of them but not sure where they show up in terms of units sold. Assume they aren't in the PDA lists.

Soup; I think the Texas schools all buy as a group, but most others are fragmented and so Texas has more weight than it pop base would indicate in school book sales.
Large Apple factory in Carrolton(still there??)

I think they should make a lap top with no keyboard and no monitor. You just take the bare box and plug it into a mini dock at home or school, or just have VGA, KB, Mouse, SCSI and parallel connectors, shaped like a schoolbook and 1" thick, no batteries, just a 5V adaptor(1 at home and 1 at school) This would save the expense and weight of a laptop screen and funny keyboard. 2 std keyboards and 2 color monitors and 2 mice cost(350-400)(and a lot less for black and white screens) a lot less than 1 display($800-2000) and one funny keyboard($100) and one funny mousepin($15), And a lot of weight will be saved. The kids rarely use them as laptops and can take them back and forth like a school book. Less theft and more robustness.
A portable like that with a pentium or Apple CPU and 32M could weigh under 2 pounds,or less, and make the idea fly very well.
