Thanks, Stonehenge, for the advice and encouragement.

If price appreciation, then, is the single source of increasing return, then it would seem that picking the right stocks, coupled with timing your entry, is crucial for success. Is this any easier than timing short-term buys and sells?

You can guess my next question: what is your method for stock selection? I've read W. O'Neill's book (CAN-SLIM), and have also tried the Pitbull system of selection (a modified, and more successful version of CANSLIM). But both advocate fairly quick in-and-out trading, and I simply don't have the time to watch my stocks that closely...

PS: I'm in TIAA-CREF, with a 10% salary input from my employer, which I just about match. Have selected a fairly aggressive mix. You too?

PPS: I'm curious to know about your business, and how you manage to run it, in addition to a full-time teaching load (I see you teach finance in the great windy city-I love Chicago-whereas I teach philosophy in exile in Northeast Ohio).

Thanks again for your time, and patience with a novice investor...

Happy trading to all on the thread this week, TC.
