Okay for debat purposes let say there is a very big demand for videoconferencing. Why is Corel videoconferencing so great? Do they have a patent on compression techniques that they can liscense to other companies? When I saw it, it sure was jerky so I don't think they have anything that is superior to any of the other video compression products out there other than they send it over the network with computer data.

My point is that other companies can just jump in to implement videoconferencing with existing compression technology. Mind you it will take time for other companies to do this efficiently over the network. If Corel had a superior compression technique and could liscense this then they would be in a advantagous position but the only advantage they have is that the product is ready to go.

Since I have been reading up on Ralph Nader and his very good description of MS monopolistic tacktics I was not that well informed on how powerful MS is. If you make MS mad at your company you could be in danger of getting wiped out due to MS monoplistics controls over software and hardware vendors. The bottom line is that in a monopolistic enviorement a superior products and good marketing will not make a company rich. Here is some following examples
WP first came out it was the number one word processor how did it lose market share to Word? MS owns it.
Lotus 123 lost to Excell MS owns it.
Apple and IBM OS2 is superior to Windows OS but Windows has 90% share. Nescape losing share to IE MS owns it.
These products and probably many more can't compete fairly in a MS enviorement so this is why the push is on by IBM Oracle Netscape Sun (NOISE) to get a new computer platform. This is why IMHO Corel will have a ruff go on the Windows platform unless the DOJ breaks up MS which is problably not going to happen anytime soon but the DOJ will cause MS to walk softly on Corel.
I know the Corel faithfull won't like my point of view but that's the way I see it.

Don't miss your opportunity to postulate Mike Cowpland as the worst CEO of 1997 at the following SI thread:

Subject 18311

I can think of few other companies in which the CEO played such a key role in screwing things up...
