you can use ultrasonic testing (measurement of the velocity of sound) to distinguish between gold-plated tungsten bars, coins, etc versus pure gold.

a google search of "ultrasonic gold test" gives many examples:
e.g.

olympus-ims.com

goldmoney.com

I would think any large company dealing in physical gold must currently use ultrasonic or a related technique to verify that their bars/coins are not fake. There are probably some unscrupulous dealers out there trying to pass fake gold plated W items as real gold, so caveat emptor and know your source when buying physical.
