Doug , re. Dell and others satisfied with much lower prices
Yes it should obvious to all that the PC business is becoming a commodity business just like DRAM , disk drives etc.
The same competitive forces are now affecting the PC business .
IBM and HP are not happy being passed by Dell and Compaq will fight tooth and nail in the pricing of PCs and in adopting Dell's methods
of marketing and manufacturing . The end result lower prices and lower profit margins , Brian

Doug
I know this is not a perfect example:
You have Geo Prisms and Neons with 2 airbags, power windows, ABS brakes, wipers with delay, 2 cup holders, AirCon and all "bells an whistles" for $12,000.00. No matter how many of these you sell, the sales Grand Cherokees, Blazers, 4-Runners, Explorers have never hurt a bit! (at prices of 25-40K and beyond!-Matter of fact the M-class,the Mercedes equivalent has a 1 1/2 yr waiting period!)
I will reiterate this is not a perfect example but attempt to stress that cosumer behaviour cannot always be explained by prices alone. The sub 1k and "experienced" PC consumer may acually be different animals! And for whatever reason, some people actually have a Neon and Cherokee in the same driveway.
I am a still a strong believer that Dell has no business joining the profitless sub 1k market slugfest. We shall soon see a lot of bruised knuckles and bruised balance sheets...remember the Yugo?.. my other cent!
