That's one of the most common sense zoning changes in the last thirty years. San Francisco is the second most densely populated city in the US, yet it's still a car town. If we're going to grow, we might as well grow up, not out.

Something like 70% of the residents of SF rent. The vast majority rent in shared living situations in old houses. Not really the best situation for an adult desiring some privacy. A bedroom in a house goes for over a thousand in decent neighborhoods. Might as well pay a bit more and have your own place.

Legions of young people have said 'no' to the material accumulation path, too. Give them some hip clothes, some cool electronic gadgets and they're good to go.

Now we just need some decent mass transit.
