Re:retirement

Read this very unappetizing comment, below the article you linked.... :)

Sleepless • a year ago

The suppliers of these lists are in the business of selling real estate. They paint a rosy picture without mentioning the very real negatives. They don't mention, for instance, that Granada, like all of Nicaragua is filthy with garbage in the streets, lakes used like latrines, toxic smoke from the burning of plastics by your neighbors and horrible noise night and day. The churches set off mortars (bombs) for every celebration, every few hours and there is a saint to "celebrate" for nearly every day of the year. Water and electricity can go off at any time without warning and may be out for hours or days. The whole consumer experience is "buyer beware". There are no zoning laws so your neighbor can open a disco or a factory on the other side of your bedroom wall and you have no recourse. As it's the poorest country in Latin America, sure it's cheap to live here -- and you get what you pay for. Rent and live here for a year before committing long term. All the above may be worth it for some, but for many it's a nightmare. If you like your cities to have street names and addresses, a postal system that works, libraries and the peaceful enjoyment of your own home, Nicaragua is not the place for you.

I've heard Nah Trang is becoming a hot spot for American expats

Been to Nha Trang in both 68 and 69. SF HQ Viet Nam was there.

Beautiful beaches and islands. Plenty of VC. One good French restaurant. One navy ship provided much or most of the power. Nothing else worth mentioning in good company.
