They probably are delicious. Cattle taste good so elephants likely do too. <25,000 a year being killed, many for their Ivory > Rumour has it that a lot of Africans don't have big surpluses of food so it could be that a monster free meal on the hoof is very tempting, with ivory as a bonus. One elephant could feed a tribe for weeks. But they'd have to be careful not to annoy the other elephants as a herd of angry elephants could really mess up a village.
