Driverless or autonomous cars will only become more common and Manhattan won't be an exception. Privacy rights are what I consider the main issue more than safety. Robotic cars will literally be roving video cameras collecting information, but that's the world of the future.

Wonder how it would do on the Eisenhower tunnel climb out of Silverthorne during a blizzard? I was weaving in and out of traffic one time, where guys with poor tires were spinning. Farther up was an 18 wheeler putting on snow chains in the middle lane, ufb!

Personally, I'm curious as the dickens about some of the details
DARPA has sponsored several contests for autonomous vehicles. The first in 2004 was a 150 mi mostly off road course in the CA -NV desert. The best result made it almost 8 miles! In 2005, over a similar course 5 out of 23 entrants completed the course, and all but one did better than the previous year's best. In 2007, a 60 mi urban course was simulated on a military base. The maps provided were intentionally very incomplete. 6 out of 11 completed within the time limit.

The entries have been a mix of University and corporate teams.

While these didn't have the competitive traffic of NY, the first 2 were on very difficult terrain, and third had very incomplete information. In all cases, the vehicles had to find a route on their own.
