The technical hurdles are relatively minor, and the cost savings will trump the initial negative psychological factors. what nonsense. the technical hurdles 'are relatively minor' but the psychological factors are HUGE who wants to give up driving autonomy just 'because' it is easier to sit back and let the car drive itself (can't let you do that DAVE?? anyone?) i will not use 'cruise control'in traffic for this very reason...it is a PAIN IN THE ASS....just hand me the controls, i would rather do it myself! there are certainly situations (high density cities, like vancouver, where my son lives and has ditched his personal car) where assuming, there is excellent public transportation for the majority of travel ,is easy and you only need a personal auto 'on occasion' (think zip cars) but living in the suburbs where there is major need for personal automobile transportation , imo, provides NO cost savings whatsoever and a limiting factor on freedom of unrestricted driving (seriously do you think you will be able to 'drive' your 'autocar' in a high traffic situation? imagine the 10 in LA with a traffic jam...you want to 'drive' your car? um no....the proper 'authorities' will disable your vehicle until traffic clears) my 'personal drive' car will go away only from my cold clenched hands on the steering wheel and my foot on the gas pedal....and the brake seriously....is 'driving' really so difficult? just TRY to take my freedom of movement out of my hands.... just TRY
