He went there because he loves the Violin, and they are the best from what he has found.

If it makes him happy, he is wise to do what he did. He may find a career, or a line of business in the field. If not, he'll have a fun avocation. Except for hard sciences and professions, college most of the time tuns out to be general education anyway. But if he's lucky and will be able to make a living doing what he enjoys, more power to him.

He went up there a Libertarian but will be converted,

My mother (Smoothsail) and I have a friend who hung out with Ayn Rand and her group of minions back in the 60s. He was the first objectivist/libertarian that I met. I discovered libertarianism totally organically, but it was really cool having it validated by someone else having the same or similar philosophies.

Recently he has been posting on facebook quite a bit on politics. He's gone to the dark side and appears to be a liberal now. What has changed....well, I suspect that it had a lot to do with his wife. Nice lady, comes off as an artsy fartsy liberal, though we have never talked politics.

Though he is in his 60s now, I suspect that he went with the spousal flow and adopted her politics.
