Someone renamed French fries. Prohibition forbid alcohol. It was considered patriotic to drink Madeira wine. As the British -always the British- forbid US ships to not take cargo from Europe to the US.

The ships would make a stopover in Madeira Island and load with wine. Thus it was patriotic to drink Madeira wine: the Americans then would be contributing to keep the merchant marine.

The Turkey was not chosen as the national symbol because they were eaten at a national celebration. They decided to make do with the eagle.

Food is very political thing for Americans. No wonder I thought the satire was serious.
