I think that jobs number is initial claims for unemployment benefits, in which case a substantial drop would make sense. Anyone with a pulse is getting a job in retail for the next month.

Don,

If the news is a substantial drop in "new" jobs it could have something to do with the large layoffs announced at EK and a couple of other major companies recently.

And they seasonally adjust the numbers so part time holiday jobs may not have an affect.

As far as paying attention to the news I do, but avoid the short term analysis and focus on the longer term trends.

That was very useful, as an example, in the late seventies and early eighties when they squeezed the money supply all the while scaring everyone about continuing inflation. Helped keep the focus on a liklihood of a long term downtrend in interest rates which continues today.
