The more immediate issue is the electrical grid. A very severe solar storm or a rogue EMP (electromagnetic pulse) attack (initiated by one nuclear bomb exploded in the upper atmosphere) has the potential to destroy the electric grid. A fix would take years - no electricity, refrigeration, water etc. Tens if not hundreds of million would die in the US alone. This can be avoided if we ruggedize the grid (Faraday cages, etc) before its too late.

That's the chart of the Regular Gas price I was looking for, every time the Republicans say the price has "doubled" under Obama. To get a double you have to start with the Bush crash price in 12/08 or 1/09. But from 4 years ago, from early 10/08, the price is flat.
