While I agreed pretty much with his original remarks, this is a very smart move politically -- he inoculated himself before the next debate. I'm quite sure this question presented more of a problem for Romney than any other Obama might have brought up, and Obama was asleep at the switch. As a result, Romney has now put the issue behind him; if it comes up in two weeks, he's got a ready made answer, short and to the point -- "I did make that statement and in reflecting on it I agree it was not the right thing to have said, which is the reason I said as much." That issue is history for all practical purposes.
