Bret and Jay are in Japan this week at the conference reviewing Cymer and other carriers. They stated earlier that they would reconsider their ratings after this conference relative to reviewing competition which Cymer has claimed to this point is non-threatening.

RE: "Optical lithography good til 2006."

Good article. I can't wait to see the finished Roadmap.

Regarding the statement "optical litho good til 2006" I want to make a couple of comments. Nobody should forget that although DUV (248nm or 193nm) will probably be able to print most if not all layers until 2006 that does not mean that optical litho will just die at that point. Nor does the fact that IBM is supposedly building an "X-Ray Fab" mean that optical litho has no place in that fab.

When non-optical technologies begin to take off, optical litho will still be widely used for the bulk of most processes (non-critical layers). Optical litho still has several DECADES left of life in it.

Granted, the strongest growth will occur between now and that "2006" date, but growth will still be quite strong for years beyond that.
