1 Dead, 7 Hurt in Ky. High School Shooting
03:43 p.m Dec 01, 1997 Eastern

PADUCAH, Ky. (Reuters) - A high school student wearing earplugs calmly opened fire on fellow students gathered for a prayer service Monday, killing one and wounding seven, authorities said.

The victims were six girls and two boys between the ages of 14 and 17.
One 15-year-old girl died after being rushed to Lourdes Hospital and a
14-year-old girl was on life support at another facility.

Another 17-year-old girl was in critical condition, two other girls were in serious condition and another was in fair condition, the hospitals said, while one boy was in fair condition and a second boy was treated and released.

Heath High School principal Bill Bond said the 14-year-old freshman
male student, whom he did not name, pulled out a .22-caliber automatic handgun and fired nearly a dozen shots just as a daily prayer circle was disbanding and classes were about to resume for the week.

The boy then dropped the weapon and surrendered calmly to the
principal. His pockets contained three more loaded bullet clips and he
wore earplugs to muffle the sounds of gunshots. Bond said the boy told
him he was sorry.

By his side were two rifles and two shotguns wrapped in a blanket. The
boy said he had stolen the weapons from a neighbor's garage.

Bond said the shooter had apparently had been warning other students
of ''something big happening'' since Friday, but his motive was not immediately known.

The school cancelled classes and frantic parents were arriving to check on their children.

Since this release the death toll is now 2. Who thought we would see the day when our children would be killed in public schools just for saying a prayer!

My heart goes out to the families.
