Think back to Election Day 2008. Obama won a tight race and probably had very little "done" for his transition. He had to make a decision on Fed Chairman by late December or so. While considering GM and Chrysler, and everything else. Bank of America was trying to back out of buying Merrill Lynch and Bernanke and Paulson were trying to force it.

mindmeld: I'm just surprised the Dems go for that,

Obama probably relied on Goolsbee and Valerie Jarrett to choose Geithner, and he helped choose to keep Bernanke. You can only fight so many simultaneous battles. And that decision doesn't come up until this December.

It's not obvious Obama would keep Bernanke, but my guess is he will, or at least offer it. It has to be in time to choose someone else and have that person confirmed.
