3D printers are fun and even useful for some things, but materials science is a huge field which means the economic value of 3D printing will be very limited. It wouldn't even be possible to make a ball point pen or roll of sellotape.

The volume capacity and efficiency of large scale manufacturing means there's not going to be much use for 3D printing.
