U.S. FOCUSES ATTENTION TO DEFENSE OF THE HOMELANDDecember 1, 1997ÿA special Pentagon panel today is to recommend to Defense Secretary Cohen that there should be a profound shift in American military strategy focusing on the "defense of the homeland" instead of exercising power overseas according to the London Electronic Telegraph. The report is said to promote concentration on the growing threat of hit and run attacks on U.S. cities by an increasing number of nations noting that many enemies of America are developing biological or chemical weapons and the ability to deliver them to the mainland.

Sounds good to me!

But of course, you are way over-optimistic! The gold coins might melt and fuse together. But I suppose when everything returns to normal, you can remelt the gold and sell it, eh? But, if your gold happened to be located in the area of the blast, the location where your gold is may be declared off limits for a long time. Also, you can't count on the blast being a 'clean' one (i.e. only a mighty hot and superfast destructive air storm). A 'dirty' bomb(uranium or plutonium) or a neutron bomb (the Israelis have said they might use this against Iraq if they are attacked) could make lots of things radioactive and turn many areas into forbidden zones (e.g., see the movie "Planet of the Apes"), and also make the gold too 'hot' to handle and necessitate hundreds of years of 'cooling' before it is safe to handle again. I guess this is OK if you are a biblical Methuselah!!!

Don't forget that Chernobyl was not a nuclear bomb blast disaster! If Chernobyl had exploded, it would have been something very, very much worse.

The reason some people prefer gold certificates is that they are more portable and are more easily sold than gold. Trouble is that sometimes the buyers of gold would insist on authentication tests of the gold before buying it. This is too much of a hassle for some people in a hurry to get their cash.
