In ways the strikes and riots are being under-reported and in ways they are being over-reported.

The strikes are in very localized regions. The areas that are seeing the most action are the platinum mining region of Rustenburg and the iron ore mines at north cape town. The activity at the Sishen iron ore mine is relatively new and caused my itinerary to be changed on the fly. In Jo'burg and Pretoria, there really isn't any signs of what is going on in the mining regions. On Friday I was in the coal region and there aren't any signs of strikes there yet.

the way the strikes are being under-reported is that our media isn't reporting that the mining union is asking for 100% raises and that the miners are initiating the violence. And it is brutal violence. Nine police officers were hacked to death with axes. What we heard about was the police response where 34 miners were killed.

Notice that Huffpo neglects the cause of the police action against the strikers. (the policemen who were killed were black, BTW).

What, you think Jorj is some kind of Nelson Mandela?
