20 of the world’s most violent cities are in Latin America according to a table released by a Mexican think tank - the Citizens' Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice.
Of the world’s 50 most violent cities, 45 are in the Americas. The rest of the dangerous cities were located in Africa and the Middle East. None of the top 50 was in Europe despite its current economic and social problems. The table certainly doesn’t make good reading for Brazil, 14 of their cities have made the list. The United States received some disturbing scores with three of their cities named.
However, it is important to remember that the results are based entirely on murder rate per capita in 2011. Other crimes have not been taken into account. It is also worth noting that almost all of these cities have drug related gang problems. This inter gang violence is the source of the vast majority of the murders on the table.
