Globespan Semiconductor Announces Availability of Splitterless Consumer-Installable DSL, CiDSL, Modem Chipset -- Company To Leverage Field Experience In Support Of G.adsl-lite Standardization -- RED BANK, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 1, 1997-- Globespan Semiconductor announced today that it is extending its existing DSL product line to include new, Consumer-installable Digital Subscriber Line (CiDSL(TM)) chipsets. This new solution is focused on minimizing the costs that service providers would incur to deploy wide-scale consumer DSL solutions. This exciting new CiDSL product family is based on the Company's fourth generation high density, power efficient DSL chipset family. Globespan's new offering delivers high speed and long reach performance by using an innovative, cost-effective modular Micro Data Filter(tm) which is installable by the consumer. This easy to install solution offers immediate availability of a DSL product that is interoperable with the existing installed base of central office equipment. As a result, it virtually eliminates the performance impact of home wiring and phone configurations without using expensive and hard to install Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) splitters. Using the patented Micro Data Filter, Globespan's newly introduced product line can achieve both symmetrical and asymmetrical speeds from 90,000 bits per second (90 Kbps) to 7 million bits per second (7 Mbps) and can reach distances up to 22,000 feet depending on product configuration. ''Today, our CiDSL is the only deliverable product offering that makes mass deployment of DSL service a reality,'' said Armando Geday, CEO of Globespan. ''It's a win-win solution for service providers and equipment manufacturers that can satisfy the pent-up demand for high speed Internet access.'' Globespan has developed special algorithms that can be software downloaded into the modem to automatically compensate for the specific home wiring/phone configurations where a Micro Data Filter is not easily installable. While the CiDSL rate adaptive family is available in a variety of speed ranges and packages, Globespan will focus on providing significant value at consumer modem prices by offering lower speed options. The RDT 1001A data pump, for example, is available now in production quantities and consists of two 100 pin TQFP (Thin Quad Flat Pack) packages and dissipates only 760 milliwatts. Under realistic line conditions, it operates at up to 640 kbps downstream and 408 kbps upstream over distances of 19,000 feet. The RD1001B version is also available now in production quantities in a 132 pin PQFP (Plastic Quad Flat Pack)/68 pin PLCC (Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier) configuration and is priced at $39 in 100,000 unit quantities. Reference designs for the Micro Data Filter are available now with modular implementations expected to cost less than $5 from a variety of suppliers. Globespan will capitalize on its proven field experience to actively support and accelerate the efforts by the ITU's G.adsl-lite committee to define a new industry standard for a low cost, easy to use, easy to deliver DSL standard. Globespan Semiconductor Inc., formerly GlobeSpan(tm) Technologies Inc., is the world's largest supplier of DSL modem chipsets that enable users to transfer data over standard telephone copper wire at speeds up to two hundred times faster than today's popular V.34 modems. The Company's founding technical team began developing advanced modem algorithms and a DSL optimized, Billion Operations Per Second (BOPS), software downloadable digital signal processor (DSP) in 1988 at AT&T Bell Labs. Today, Globespan's fourth generation technology and five years of field experience have made it the only company offering production quantities of commercially deployable DSL solutions (ADSL, HDSL, MSDSL, SDSL, RADSL) to more than sixty equipment manufacturers worldwide that represent 80% of the DSL market.
