I have a book recommendation for you: Private Empire: ExxonMobile ad American Power by Steve Coll. Coll is the author of Ghost Wars, which may be the definitive book on the origins of Al Qaeda. Private Wars was, as I expected, a bit of a hatchet job on ExxonMobile. Mineral extraction is a dirty but necessary business, and anyone who thinks that the successful multinationals do not have to compromise themselves environmentally and politically is simply naive. After reading the book I came away convinced that ExxonMobile is one of the best managed companies in the U.S. Their research is second to none.

The book has an excellent chapter on the reasoning behind ExxonMobile's acquisition of XTO.
