MS Security Essentials receives reasonably good reviews and should work just fine. I prefer independent security tools and use free versions of AVG for AV and Zone Alarm for a firewall. As with all such programs you will find naysayers and advocates. They do require a small bit of tweaking, but I have used both for many many years (dare I say it) without incidence or infections.

I comprehend your slight apprehension on the first travel usage, but be reminded that there are thousands out there that do this every day all day. Just administer good computing practices and you'll enjoy having your computer while on the road. Oh, and one last caution that laptops are high theft targets so always keep yours in sight.

MSSE is pretty good. It caught a dangerous malware attempt on my laptop the other day. First time. It advised me to scan with an antivirus program, which I did. I was pleasantly surprised at the catch.
