That's exactly what we've learned from Microsoft, it's not necessarily the best product that wins, it's the savviest marketer. Hopefully there will be a "second act" for Ancor. Like you I hope we hear some meaningful news soon.

Paula,

Funny, I just heard a Syquest commercial on the radio for their drives.

The difference here is that the switches adhere to an ANSI standard developed by the FC community. Therefore it should not come down to an apples to oranges battle between Ancor and Brocade's products. It is an apples to apples comparison, and while Brocade may win some contracts with smoke and mirrors and clever marketing, they should not be able to run away with the entire marketplace like IOMG did.

One really big differencs. Iomega became the standard and Syquest is incompatible. So Syquest lost. With FC, the standards are allready in place. Both Companies fit the standards. Only, ANCOR fit's more of them. A brocade switch in place does not make ANCOR more or less valueable. It isn't a fair comparison.

<edit> I guess I should have read Steve's post first. The thing is people just keep wanting to compare this situation to microsoft, iomega, or other companies situation where there have been clear winners and losers. The fact of the matter is when we have both companies adhering to the standard, then people arn't going to be buying one company because they ARE the standard. They are going to look at price, perfomance features, and support. With multiple companies with good product, you can have multiple winners.

<<<There once was a great cartridge drive maker call Syquest and I really liked their products. Then along came a company called Iomega and they made a small cartridge called the Zip. I though: heck. Syquest is coming out with a better product (more space and faster access) and decided to put my $ in SYQT. Well, most of you know what
happened. The Zip drive became the defacto standard in a really BIG market and the last I looked, Syquest is still struggling to keep from going belly-up. I learned my lesson: better product don't matter beans, it's the selling of the product that matters and
Brokade is wining this race hands down. The management at ANCR better get their act together because somethimes there is no second act for some companies. >>>

The difference between your scenario in SYQT/IOMG vs Brocade/Anocr is that anywhere you see a Brocade switch, you can replace it with an Ancor switch and the new network configuration will work instantly and perform better. On the other hand, anywhere you see an Ancor switch, you may or may not be able to replace it with a Brocade switch because of 'Class 1' service and FC_AL service that Ancor also supports. This is the beauty of a real standard, not a defacto standard. In addition, Ancor has something extra that other switch companies don't have.
