Major mistake by Romney. Romney said Macy's went bankrupt. He just lost a lot of votes. Federated Department Stores bought Macy's and took its name. Earlier Federated bought May Department Stores and other department store companies. This was a roll-up of big companies, not a bankruptcy. Federated bought Macy's when Macy's was weak, and the current Macy's is a strong company on the NYSE. I don't recall that the original Macy's filed bankruptcy, but if they did, that's not the current company. M pays a cash dividend, most recently September 30.
