OSO Java is awesome and it'll succeed because it is just what the doctor order for the "connected compputer". It's simple to learn (relatively speaking), and can be used for fast development (relatively speaking). Java Beans (components) are superb and if they can somehow address the slowness of byte-code they'll probably be good to go. I know they said they've addressed it - so let's see. Besides I've seen some monstrous deals with big banks etc. A good sign for the long term viability.

Regarding how SUN does can't tell... the company's huge, don't know enough... Check this out:

Boy the SOX did well yesterday! And LSI too! Nice to see leadership by the high-tech leaders (except ORCL!). Should bode well. In the interest of buying when everyone else hates it and even when the sector problems are very real, bought a speculative MID-TERM investment semi-equip yesterday - SVGI. They are just ramping up production of a new DUV lithography tool and just got a new Korean company for a customer. Yup Korean.... UTEK later...

Thanks for the SDRAM article. This could be a big problem. But see why I like the semi-equip testers! These complicated chips need to be tested every which way to Sunday. And since they are back-end tools I'm hoping that they will be able to pull through any slight-to-average downturn in 1998. Late 1998 to 1999 should be the year DRAM demand comes in line with supply. Or maybe sooner if the Korean chebols are forced to slowdown - they make a sizable chunk of the world's DRAM - Samsung especially. Of course there is still considerable oversupply right now. Not sure what % SDRAM is.

Oh and one more. I was at Software Development '97 this October and attended a discussion about NCs. One of the panel made the comment that "if they had waited for SUN they'd never have got their customers what they wanted". And everyone laughed and agreed. I think he was referring to JAVA.

RE: the contest - so I'm losing - what else is new... But fight to the bitter end. Did say first 2 weeks in Decemeber would look good but could not see 27 as being an acceptable number... turns out I may have been half-right.

Saw Cramer on "Charlie Rose" yesterday. That guy is nuts. And bullishly bullish.
