Data Quest gets its data right on AAPL's "QuickTime" release:

Apple takes the 1st round from MSFT

By comparison Microsoft's Direct X looks like an erector set:

What cajones "Microsoft targeted Apple" . Hopefully Apple will put these MSFT scoundrels in their place , which should be a distant # 2 .

Congrats to the AAPL staff !

>>I was surprised to see two 6500s at the Emeryville, CA store. <<

Marc,

The Circuit City near Burger King and Lyon's? I used to live in Emeryville during my UC Berkeley days back in '93. What wonderful memories.

I for one would be very surprised if any of the staff at Circuit City knows much about the Mac. It would be too much to ask considering that even staffs at stores that specialize in computers like Fry's and Computer City don't always know what they're talking about.

On a differnt note, Apple has been very aggressive in the last couple of weeks in trying to boost sales. I'm not sure what to think of it.
1) Double rebates for the add-on take-off promotion
2) $10 Donation for each copy of MacOS.
3) Free QuickTake 200 with every order of G3,8600, G3 Powerbook.
...there are probably other incentive programs that I've missed.

I assume that the free QT200 deal only applys to purchases made via Apple's direct sales arm. I guess it's a good way to lower QT200 inventory, which I heard will soon be discontinued and at the same time promote direct purchase without inducing further price wars. QT200 normally is a very low volume product. With this program, I imagine it'll be out of stock within a couple weeks.

My fear is that these promotion programs will cut too heavily into Apple's margin. The QT 200 for example lists for $599. Bundling a free QT200 with a $1999 G3/233 is a steal. At some point I'm starting to think that either Apple is very confident that it's going to be in the black this quarter or has given up it and instead wants to look good by significantly increasing its revenue.

Eric

Marc,

I don't know if the Circuit City computers were the new or old ones. I didn't spend more than 5 seconds looking at the sticker after I saw they had no G3's. If I have to go back soon, I will take a closer look and let you know. It's not on my generally beaten path these days, however.
